Wine?

In the hand of the LORD is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs.

Uh... What? I was totally confused on this verse! I even checked a few different translations, but those didn't help at all. Please comment and help me out!

Hi LB.

This is a tough verse to understand for those of us who don't drink wine or understand wine in Biblical times. I think I can help.

Psalm 75 is talking about how God judges people. It tells us that He alone is the One who judges, that He is a righteous Judge, and He alone is fit to hand out consequences. Then we see the verse you have here.

This is an illustration about drinking wine the way they used to make it a long time ago. If you don't drink wine (which you and I don't) it will be hard to understand. Even more, it has to do with how they USED to make wine.

Apparently, the way they used to make wine, there was a bunch of dirt and junk that happened to get mixed into the wine and was not strained out. It would sink to the bottom, so if you poured from the top, it would stay at the bottom, and what you get in your cup would be pure. However, if you shook it up and then poured it, the icky stuff would be poured into the cup as well.

The passage is saying that God rewards and punishes as He sees fit. He's the One who pours the wine, so He is free to shake it up, giving those who don't honor Him the nasty part. Not only is He free to shake it and the pour it, but what He pours in your cup, you have to drink.

Hope that helps.
